Learning Support Assistant - EAL Specialist (Secondary)

Teaching and Learning: Preparation
  • Be proficient in the teaching of English as a Second Language and be able to relate these to daily communications with colleagues and offer guidance.
  • Plan, lead and assess EAL lessons and EAL differentiated subject lessons (co-taught with a subject teacher) with clear objectives and expectations, as specified by the Head of EAL.
  • Utilise learning technology confidently (e.g. Google suite, learning apps, Firefly, iSAMS and to maintain iPads etc.).
  • Prepare and make use of required teaching resources, materials, educational aids, displays and learning spaces.
  • Communicate regularly with class teachers to ensure teaching/support is collaborative, appropriate and directly related to the BSJ curriculum (including IN or EAL programmes).
  • Know your role for each lesson and to have the essential ‘need knows’ such as understanding facts, concepts and outcomes.
  • Maintain a safe environment for students.

Teaching and Learning: Deployment Within Lessons
  • Be punctual to classes and to attend lessons as per timetable.
  • Work across the Secondary School as required.
  • Teach and support students with a range of EAL needs using small group teaching, in class support and 1:1 methods as needed.
Teaching and Learning: Interaction with Students
  • Confidently use and model accurate use of the English language when listening, reading, speaking and writing.
  • Build effective relationships with students to support their well-being.
  • Regularly get up to date knowledge of EAL support strategies and to utilise these when working with EAL students with their varying abilities, differentiating tasks accordingly.
  • Adapt learning tasks to meet the needs of students that you work with, differentiating according to their need.
  • Be familiar with, and use, the scaffolding process to promote student independence and to encourage students to retain ownership and responsibility for their learning.
  • Mark the work of the students you work with, using accurate vocabulary and punctuation.
  • Use a range of questioning skills when working with students including bilingual/multilingual skills to interpret or translate as relevant.
  • Allow sufficient wait time for students to think and respond to questions.
  • Be familiar with a variety of techniques that encourage students’ positive behaviour and to seek advice when necessary.

Interaction with other stakeholders
  • Update the Head of EAL and EAL teachers both formally and informally regarding student progress/ concerns including the termly feedback document (meetings/ conversations)
  • Respond to communications appropriately.
  • Represent the Languages Faculty and to contribute towards conversations at relevant year group meetings and IN/EAL team meetings.
  • Be present and contribute to Case Conferences, EAL parent meetings, PTCs, transition/other meetings and complete relevant documentation.
  • Liaise and work with external multi-agencies.
Assessment, Reporting and Record Keeping
  • Be fully versed in the EAL Referral Process, entrance and exit criteria and relate this to daily communications with colleagues and to offer guidance.
  • Be familiar with wellbeing monitoring and recording documentation, to know which of the students you work with hold Ongoing Wellbeing Records.
  • Provide frequent feedback to class teachers for students supported, including students who are withdrawn from lessons.
  • Assess students using WIDA via entry, exit and progression assessments. To become familiarised with WIDA and all related support materials.
  • Keep ongoing records of teacher and LSA planning meetings and ensure these are kept-up-to date.
  • Maintain ongoing weekly records of student progress relating to student achievements and areas of challenge to inform LSA and teacher planning.
  • Contribute to EAL Language Portraits and learner profiles..
  • Support with EAL assessments
1.) Complete WIDA or CEFR EAL language assessments.
2.) Contribute to initial and termly assessments of new students.

Developing a Specialism
  • Have an EAL specialism, a particular area of interest to lead within the Secondary School.
  • Be proactive in enhancing your knowledge and understanding within your area of specialism (source CPD, communicate with coordinators etc.).
  • Proactively lead aspects of training for peers with regards to your specialism.

Other Duties
  • Be professional at all times.
  • Uphold all safeguarding policies and child protection procedures within the school.
  • Meet set deadlines provided by the school.
  • Partake in individual, departmental and whole school professional development opportunities and then feedback to colleagues where appropriate.
  • Provide in-house cover for EAL/IN specialist lessons, in-class support and break/lunch duties, as needed.
  • Follow absence procedures as stated by the school.
  • Lead Enrichments and After School Activities.
  • Be willing to partake in any other job related activities, as directed by the Head of EAL and Secondary Leadership Team.
