Job Purpose

The Communications Officer will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of media and communications outputs mainly under the Health and WASH Programme focussed on external news media, social media and other digital communications and capacity strengthening of National Societies; facilitating sharing knowledge and increase the programme visibility in the member countries and other relevant stakeholders, particularly relating to CP3 (Community Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness), the Polio Eradication Campaign as well as WASH initiatives.
The Communications Officer will work under direct supervision of Health and WASH Coordinator and technical support from Development Coordinator at IFRC CCD Indonesia and APRO Communication Manager.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

The Incumbent will work closely with the IFRC Communications team to support Health and WASH program team and technical assistant for overall communication issue for IFRC programming to execute the following tasks:

  • Advise and support in the development of program materials such as human-Interest Stories, collaborate with PRD and the health team on donor reports and proposals. Collaborate with Health and PRD teams on factsheets, info-graphs and other products that are developed and disseminated to donors and target groups through relevant media and network channels.
  • The Communications Officer will assist, particularly but not limited to, the health and WASH program, PRD and other relevant teams both in IFRC and PMI in the proposal development stages to identify appropriate communication activities for the various delegation projects.
  • Working in collaboration with other Communication CCD team members, IFRC APRO Communications and with National Societies, particularly with PMI to coordinate and align effectively on public communications including but not limited to the field of Health and WASH, specifically for CP3, Polio and other Health and WASH projects.
  • In collaboration with Sr. Communication Officer, develop and maintain contact information, materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) in relation to health, pandemic prevention and Polio’s project targeted areas to increase coverage of conservation issues in the media (print, broadcast and digital).
  • Specific activities may include draft and edit articles, press releases, human interest stories and other advocacy/information materials mostly for Health and WASH project but can be expended to other delegation programs.
  • In collaboration with Sr. Communication Officer Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials of the CCD, including for Health and WASH program. Maintain a library of media coverage, clippings etc in collaboration with other communication team in the CCD.

Job Duties & Responsibilities (continued)

  • Provide content for the CP3 and Polio Eradication programme blogs, organization website and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube etc) in collaboration with communication team in the CCD, National Societies and the IFRC APRO Communications team. Monitor content online and provide guidance and reactions and responses whenever needed. Ensure that the programme makes the best use of technology for key communications activities, such as content development for web sites, social media, and other digital platforms.
  • Produce timely and quality content, including human interest stories, picture stories, videos, press releases, photographs, audio-visual materials, focussed primarily on the CP3 and Polio Eradication Program.
  • Events/campaigns: Assist in organizing and generating public support for special events and campaigns to promote strategic goals of the CCD.
  • Under the supervision of Sr Communication Officer, identifying opportunities for press coverage around events and specific publications and working with colleagues to develop targeted media strategies, including drafting press releases, and pitching relevant news opinion articles.
  • Support Health and WASH programme officers in IFRC and PMI in identifying and documenting appropriate content for producing appropriate communications materials, stories, articles, audio visuals, radio, and television programmes.
  • Provide communications technical advice in the production of reports (bulletin, blurb, semi-annual and annual reports) of the CP3 and Polio Eradication program in collaboration with Health and WASH Programme Coordinator.
  • The incumbent will work with RCCE team of the CCD to provide advice as needed on quality messaging designed by the CEA team to the community and for feedback mechanisms.

Education

  • University degree in relevant field (communication; journalism)
  • Relevant post graduate qualification/technical training (or equivalent

experience) is preferred.

Experience

  • 4 - 6 years of experience with minimum of 2 years working in the area of expertise
  • Ability to independently deliver a range of compelling communications content,

including humanitarian interest stories, from the field including social media content and AV materials

  • Experience in contributing to the development of communications strategies and a variety of communications materials in complex and delicate situations.
  • Strong experience in humanitarian organization, including experience in emergency response
  • Experience in building media contacts, good presentation skills is preferred.
  • Involved in executing crisis communications plans and planning for, responding to and mitigating reputational risk is preferred.
