About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality development program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

About Australia's Mission to ASEAN

Australia's Mission to ASEAN works with the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, and with all ASEAN Member States. The Mission's work covers Australia's political-security, economic, development and socio-cultural engagement with ASEAN. It also supports senior official, Ministerial and Prime Ministerial attendance at ASEAN and East Asia Summit meetings, including through negotiating the East Asia Summit Leaders' statements.

About the position

The Policy and Public Diplomacy Officer will be required to undertake moderately complex to complex work under limited direction. The Officer will support the policy work of the mission, including through researching issues and drafting cables, as well as designing and delivering public diplomacy and media engagement events. The Officer will be required at times to work outside normal office hours, including on weekends. Within that requirement, flexible work and job-sharing arrangements can be considered.
